Her description of her own politics and her campaign platform put Ocasio-Cortez well to the left of the Democratic mainstream, but many of the individual policies she called for actually poll quite well.

In a tweet celebrating her win, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose 2016 campaign she worked on, said she had 'demonstrated once again what progressive grassroots politics can do.'

Here's a closer look at some of Ocasio-Cortez's policy proposals.

Few members of Congress have generated as much controversy and gained as much influence in as short a span of time as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The year 2019 has been a busy one for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). It began when she was sworn in as a new member of the 116th Congress, which boasted the most diverse cohort in U.S.

Ocasio-Cortez even broke longstanding inter-party protocol by endorsing the opponent of her fellow Democratic colleague Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., in his primary battle against abortion advocate. Unfavorable ratings for the New York Democrat have increased more steeply than favorable ratings, according to a new Gallup poll released Friday. About 31 percent of the American adults polled view.

Medicare for All

What she proposes: In her campaign, Ocasio-Cortez has called for 'Medicare for All,' essentially expanding and extending the government health care program for the poor to cover every American. She backed a bill from Rep. John Conyers that would virtually eliminate private medical insurance in favor of a universal health care system.

What Americans think: Polls show Americans are warming to the idea of universal health care, but the wording matters a lot. A March poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found 75% support for 'Medicare for All,' when it was framed as an option alongside the existing private insurance system, but only 59% backed the idea when it was described as a single national health care plan.

Tuition-free public college

What she proposes: Ocasio-Cortez advocated for tuition-free public colleges and trade schools. In addition, she called for the federal government to cancel student loans that it holds directly and pay off privately held student loans, arguing that it would give a boost to the economy.

What Americans think: Americans are split on the idea of eliminating tuition at public colleges. A 2016 poll by Gallup found that 47% backed the idea of making tuition free at all public colleges and universities, while 45% opposed it.

A federal jobs guarantee

What she proposes: Ocasio-Cortez called for a federal jobs guarantee in which the federal government would employ anyone who wants to work with at least a $15 minimum wage, health care and paid child and sick leave. This tracks similar ideas that have been floated by an unorthodox group of economists and backed by some key Democrats recently.

What Americans think: A Civis Analytics poll earlier this year showed 52% supported a jobs guarantee and 29% opposed it.

Legalizing marijuana

What she proposes: Ocasio-Cortez supports the federal legalization of marijuana as part of broader efforts at criminal justice reform.

What Americans think: A January poll by the Pew Research Center found that 61% of Americans think the use of marijuana should be legalized.

Aoc

Abolishing ICE

What she proposes: Ocasio-Cortez has called for abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing that its creation after 9/11 was part of an 'unchecked expansion of executive powers' and that other agencies can handle immigration enforcement.

What Americans think: There have not been reliable polls on the call to abolish ICE.

She may be a fighter. She may be a darling of the far left of the Democratic Party. Her followers may like how she takes the fight to the GOP, even if she's hitting way above her weight class. But Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-NY) approval ratings are trash. Now, is indicative that her political career is toast? It's still way too early, though some of these figures are not solid for someone in a solidly Democratic district. For now, let's just say that she's probably going to be re-elected, barring any more pushes that cost her state jobs and economic activity a la Amazon purge (via CNBC):

Thirty-one percent of registered voters in the state view the freshman House Democrat favorably, while 44 percent have an unfavorable view, according to a Siena College poll released Monday. In January, 34 percent of New York voters viewed Ocasio-Cortez favorably, versus 29 percent who had an unfavorable opinion, a Quinnipiac University poll found.

Ocasio-Cortez's support has dipped among key constituencies since January. Her net favorability — positive minus negative ratings — among Democrats fell to +17 in March from +46 in January. In New York City, she had only a +6 rating in March, down from a +32 in January. Ocasio-Cortez represents parts of the city's boroughs of Queens and the Bronx.

The change in her approval ratings may in part come from people knowing more about the lawmaker. Twenty-six percent of respondents to the Siena poll said they did not know how they felt about Ocasio-Cortez or had no opinion — down from 35 percent who said they had not heard enough about her in the Quinnipiac survey.

It could also be that Independent voters are starting to bolt from the left-wing stalwart. In less than six months time, Gallup noted her approval rating has dipped 15 points. Now, Quinnipiac is also noting that all is not well in AOC-land:

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York gets a negative 23 - 36 percent favorability rating, with 38 percent who haven't heard enough about her to form an opinion. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has been good for the Democratic Party, 33 percent of voters say, as 36 percent say she's been bad for the party.

'All is definitely not A-OK for AOC. Most voters either don't like the firebrand freshman Congresswoman or don't know who she is,' Malloy said.

Well, if past surveys have shown, the more people get to know AOC, the more they don't like her. And having a full-blown socialist agenda via Green New Deal that would wreck the economy doesn't bode well either.
